Season 2003/04 Preview

Last updated : 07 August 2003 By Kevin Smith
So the new season is almost upon us. We finally have something to live for . But how will season 2003/04 pan out? Celtic-Mad predicts...

SPL Championship

1. CELTIC The whole of Scotland (and England, France, Spain, etc etc) are still in disbelief at Celtic's trophy-less last season. With no new signings in place as yet, some critics are anxious at Martin O'Neills lack of spending, yet I still believe Celtic will prove to be the deserved Champions next season.
Watch out for Henrik Larsson, who will be looking to show his true potential once again, in his final season at Celtic.

2. RANGERS How this mob managed to flook their way through last season, I really do not know. Well, a little help from their chums at Dunfermline, Kilmarnock, the rest of the SPL and the SFA done the trick. The huns are signing duds, to keep their fans happy. They have no money and we all know it, that is why players like Henning Berg have been drafted in to stop players such as Larsson and Hartson! This season will be the beginning of a downhill struggle for the Rangers, and with Danish champions FC Coppenhagen as opponents to reach the Champions League, we could be singing 'No huns in Europe' by the end of September once again!

3. HEARTS Craig Levein has slowly but surely transformed this young Hearts side into a decent bunch of players. Tynecastle is now a worrying day out for most clubs, and I can see the Cousins of William doing well next season, with players such as Valouis, De Vries and Pressley.

4. DUNDEE The Dens Park side have always under-achieved, in my opinion. Players like Cabbalero, Nemzadze and 'keeper Speroni are top class on their day, and a trip to Dens can prove rather tricky. Should take a few points off the huns this year. Still, with Lee Wilkie in your side, you can't really expect much, can you?

5. ABERDEEN In recent years, we have managed to produce cricket scores against the Dons, but as proved at New Year, Aberdeen away is a difficult match. A young side, under the sound management of Steve Paterson.

6. PARTICK THISTLE The 'only team in Glasgow' have lost their heroic manager John Lambie, but with Gerry Collins now in charge of the re-vamped side, I believe Thistle can provide a shock and make a top 6 finish.

7. KILMARNOCK The team with the fans who couldn't get tickets for Ibrox on the final day of last season continue to survive in the SPL, and push for European places year after year. Jim Jefferies is a smart enough manager to make sure Killy will remain in the SPL for at least another year.

8. LIVINGSTON Livvy had a fantastic first season in the SPL but last year proved to be much of a dissapointment. With a new Brazilian coach in place, we have been told to expect 'sexy football' from the Lions. At Almondvale? Nah!

9. DUNFERMLINE Do not expect this side to do anything against their heroes, Rangers. With a teamsheet and management full of huns past and present, they are bound to do their best against Celtic, but I am sure the Celts will be told not to stop when banging in the goals against this shower. With a new artificial pitch being installed, it will be interesting trips to East End Park.

10. DUNDEE UNITED Ian McCall has made some very decent signings recently, Owen Coyle and Samuel from Falkirk stand out as a potential headache for defenders, but somehow I cannot see United doing anything this year.

11. HIBS Bobby Williamson has been quite unlucky since joining Hibs as manager. With a good few young players such as O'Connor and Murray, they have the potential to do well, but Williamson doesn't seem to be up to it.

12. MOTHERWELL The second luckiest team in Scotland will finish bottom of the pile again, and they will deserve it again. If not for Falkirk's 'stadium' being a complete toilet, this mob of dirty hacks would be playing their football (and kicking, punching etc etc) in the first division. Fined by the SFA for having the worst disciplinary record in the league, they do not deserve to play in the top flight. Young star James McFadden must be counting the days till another club picks him up.

Scottish Cup

I can see Celtic as winners of the Scottish Cup this season, with Henrik bagging the winner against the huns in his last game for Celtic. In the last minute. How's that for fantasy football?

League Cup

Errr, let me think. In fact I won't even bother. Dundee for the League Cup.

Europe

With no signings so far, Celtic are entering another European campaign with the same squad as last year's Seville heroes. Getting past the group stages of the Champions League would be a step forward, any further would be decent progress. The team are now well experienced, unlike the huns. I can't even see them getting into the Champions League, they will be put out of Europe at the first hurdle for the second year in a row.

Here's to the new season,

Hail Hail!
