Glenn Loovens was probably the only bhoy in today's starting line-up likely to start in the midweek Champions League qualifier but this performance at the home of English football proved to the manager that he has some quality in reserve. The 2-0 victory over Spurs combined with Friday's 5-0 romp over Al- Ahly ensured that the inaugural Wembley Cup was bedecked in green and white ribbons. Manager Tony Mowbray's team has now played three games and won two trophies, not bad going, Mogga, keep it up!
Barcelona started today's programme with a 4-1 victory over the Egyptians, Al Ahly, meaning that a draw for Celtic would have been enough for them to win the tournament but goals from the rejuvenated Chris Killen and Greek international Georgios Samaras ensured that the trophy was heading for Glasgow.
Killen got the Bhoys off the mark in just nine minutes when he connected with a wonderful cross from Paul Caddis. The New Zealand international rose above the Spurs defence to power the ball into the top right hand corner as he continued his impressive pre-season form.
Celtic doubled their lead just before half-time when Samaras scored with a lovely solo effort. Georgios collected the ball on the edge of the centre circle in his own half and deftly turned French defender Dorian Dervite before running straight for goal. Strike partner Chris Killen was quickly in the box in support but you just knew that big Sami had only one thought in mind as he ran towards the advancing Gomes and he smashed the ball into the back of the net with great aplomb.
Tottenham huffed and puffed for the whole ninety minutes without ever looking likely to trouble the Celtic rearguard too much and captain for the day Darren O'Dea put in a magnificent performance in the heart of the defence. New keeper Zaluska looked solid and reliable when called upon and in truth every player on the field today looked as if they have something to offer.
The season starts for real on Wednesday and it will be a whole different ballgame when Dinamo Moscow take the field at Celtic Park but Tony Mowbray's squad have done enough in their pre-season outings so far to suggest that the fans can approach the Champions league qualifier against the Russians with a bit of confidence.
