Ex-Celtic boss Gordon Strachan tried to recruit Fletcher back in January and according to Fletcher's agent Scott Fisher he actually tabled two bids, thought to be in the region of £2m - £2.5m, on transfer deadline day but Hibernian dismissed them out of hand and refused point-blank to negotiate. "Steven is extremely disappointed and feels let down by Hibs," the agent said back in February. "Hibs were unwilling to give Celtic a concrete figure and so we were unable to conclude a deal. Steven feels he is not getting the opportunity to further his career."
Tony Mowbray knows Fletcher well from his Easter Road days and the new Celtic gaffer is thought to be ready to make a renewed effort to bring the striker to Glasgow. Fisher, though, insist's that his immediate priority is to sit down and discuss the situation with new Hibs boss John Hughes when he return's from holiday. "John Hughes is looking to speak to all of his players over the next couple of weeks and Steven will be one of them sitting down to talk to him," said the agent. "No matter what happens, Steven will remain fully focused on the job in hand."
"There was a lot of speculation over his future in December and January," he continued. "Yet he showed in the second half of the season how focused and committed he was. He scored goals against all of the top teams in the League and gave 100 per cent. At the end of the day, he wants to make sure that his career is going in the right direction. He has been with the club since he was 17 and he is now a full international player. He's ambitious and wants to become a regular starter for Scotland."
