Ki Sung-Yong: Celtic are a step in the right direction

Although we still await official confirmation from Celtic that Ki Sung-Yong's move is complete the international midfielder has been speaking again about his January move to Glasgow. The General Manager of FC Seoul, Han Woong-Soo, confirmed last week that agreement had been reached between the clubs and that the player would join Celtic in the January transfer window.

Peter Lawwell held talks with the 20-year-old's representatives in London last week before the Champions League match against Arsenal and although both Celtic and the player were keen to push the transfer through immediately FC Seoul were unwilling to release him until after their season concludes in November. The club have the South Korean championship in their sights and having lost Ki's team-mate Lee Chung-Yong to Bolton recently they were reluctant to part with the other half of the 'Ssang Yong' (Double Dragon) midfield partnership.

Celtic's Europa League opponents Hamburg were also credited in an interest in the highly rated youngster, as were Manchester United, Porto and PSV Eindhoven, but although the player recognises that the SPL isn't viewed as the most glamorous league in Europe he's aware of the enormity of the club. "I thought about it a lot over the last few days," Ki told the Korean press. "It is a good opportunity. I am happy to think that I am progressing in the right direction. I want to go to a good league but Celtic are a historic club and this is the right road for me to go to a big league. I had offers from other clubs but I think this is the best for me."

Celtic are thought to have agreed to pay £2m for Ki although it's also thought that no fee will be disclosed. Ki Sung-Yong was hoping to begin his Celtic career this week but now that the deal is agreed he'll concentrate on FC Seoul's drive for glory over the next few months. "At the moment I am still an FC Seoul player." he said. "And it is important that I do all I can to help us achieve our target of the K-League and Asian Champions League."
