McManus Supports Managers Rotation Policy

Celtic Captain Stephen McManus yesterday backed Manager Gordon Strachan's decision to rotate his personnel in the last few weeks, stating that it is hard for the players to get dropped.

He said "If you've got a big squad, it's only going to help you. But, no matter what happens, people are always going to pipe up and have their say. It's just a case of, when you are in the side, playing as well as you can for the team.
"You want to play in as many games as you can and what drives a lot of players on is the fear of failure. Mick explained.

"The players want to be the best they can be and all you can do is play your best. It's not our decision, it's the manager's. If he feels he needs to change his side, he has the final say.
We are lucky we have a lot of top players in the squad, which makes it very strong. It's a long season and we will see what happens at the end of it."

Mick also echoed the sentiments of Gordon Strachan as he defended the rotation:"It's nothing new," he said. "Teams like Chelsea and Manchester United do it and all of a sudden Celtic do it and people are talking about players getting axed. He also backed up the comments from the Manager who was incredibly asked to defend his rotation policy in the press recently as rumours of player rifts were given credence in the press. Mick said:"That's not the case. It's a long season, with a lot of games, and we are trying to use the players as much as we can."

The press are making a mountain out of a mole hill with the recent exclusion of one player - Aiden McGeady. Mick however feels that this forced hiatus was more in line with the aforementioned policy rather than the manager flexing his muscles on a particular player.

"I don't think so," said the captain. "He has performed tremendously well for the last few years in training and in games.

"The gaffer decided to freshen things up and Aiden came back in and did really well."

He certainly did do well Mick, as did the whole team but there are still some players who have played a lot of football over the last few seasons who could do with a break and I think you are one of them. Your form is not as good as it has been in recent seasons, although you may just be a victim of your own high standards but you are the weaker of the two first choice centre halves at the minute.

Yours in Celtic
