It's common knowledge that Yokohama Marinos have been courting Celtic's midfield star for the past year, and some observers even thought they would get their man during the January transfer window, but contrary to popular belief Shunsuke has not yet decided whether or not he will return to Japan at the end of this campaign.
Celtic activated the twelve-month extension clause in Naka's contract last summer following his huge contribution to the club over the last three years and the news of his indecision will raise a glimmer of hope within the Celtic support. It's hard to believe that almost four years have passed since Celtic signed him from Italian club Reggina but the brilliant yet humble Japanese star will become a free agent in June.
"It is a possibility to go back to Japan at the end of the season." said Naka "But for now I only want to concentrate on winning the title - before I decide what I will do. I know that if foreign players go to a club and don't perform well they can be transferred and I feel very proud to have been here for four years and to have played so many games."
Naka is idolised by the Celtic support of course but he revealed that his manager's faith has been a major factor during his years at the club. "Every year, because the manager and chairman wanted to keep me here, I just wanted to do my best to win the title. I always want to show the club I'm with is the best."
Although Celtic might now join Yokohama Marinos as genuine contenders to re-sign him there will also be other major clubs seriously interested in a player of such proven quality. It would come as no surprise to this observer to see some of the big boys enter the bidding for a proven international who will only be 31 years-old in June.
Thats two years younger than a certain Lubo Moravcik was when he signed for Celtic and given Nakamura's professionalism and dedication, allied to his peak physical condition, it would not be a total surprise if his game was to elevate to another level in the next few years à la the Slovakian genius during his Celtic Park indian summer.
I'd hate to see it happen with another club, some of us still have pangs of regret when we see photos of Kenny Dalglish in a Liverpool shirt.........
