The background to the early signing of Derek Riordan appears to have come on the insistence of Gordon Strachan who was upset that Riordan was upset that having to wait for two and a months to pull on the green and white shirt. Riordan had opened his heart to the Celtic manager two weeks ago in a telephone call to Germany where Gordon Strachan was on pundit duty for the world cup, and asked him for a way to make all parties happy, hence Strachan contacted Peter Lawwell and asked the chief executive to make everyone happy by coming to a deal with Hibs. Lawwell was quick to act and brokered the deal that saw Celtic pay Hibs the £150,000 so that the boy could become a Bhoy for the start of the new season.
In his own inimitable way Strachan quipped "It's called spreading a little happiness, Derek's happy, Hibs are happy, Celtic's happy, and I'm happy, what more can you ask"
