The Monday Afternoon View from the Gutter!

The fact that Celtic dropped two points at home to St Mirren at the weekend has been eclipsed by the successful introduction of Derek Riordan who brought Celtic level.

The clamour of Journalists now speculating as to whether or not Deek will/should be sold or kept during the transfer window was exacerbated when young Deek came off the bench to score the equaliser.

I have never been one for knee-jerk reactions, especially when it comes to Celtic players, but Deek must now be given his chance at the expense of the beleaguered JVH.

I am still unconvinced that Deek is a central striker, the fact that he scored his goal on Saturday cutting in from the wing is testament to that. Having said that, given the lack of attacking impact that JVH has made since his return to the fold one wonders if giving Deek the nod over him will be that much of a risk. Our team is not set up to accommodate two diminutive forwards, but given the success (or lack thereof of) of the current partnership I cant see us having anything to lose.

Let’s face it, at worst we put him in the shop window!

In other news, John Reid insists that the Parkhead board is doing everything they can to match Gordon Strachan's ambition. Peter Lawwell, the club's chief executive, and Strachan, the manager, both admitted last week that qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League would have little impact on January transfer targets.

Strachan said his scouts were tracking players who would not disrupt the wage structure at the club and Reid has now stressed: "This is always the demand made of us. In Scotland we have financial constraints - if you win you qualify for about £2m; if you finish bottom of the (Barclays) Premier League it's £35m.

"Everyone knows the constraints but whenever possible we try to be helpful to the manager.

"Peter Lawwell and Gordon have been talking for some months about the positions we need to strengthen and we will systematically go through the options and alternatives and see how we can strengthen the team in those positions. I hope we can match his ambition with our support."

And finally, Maciej Zurawski is reportedly on the verge of a move to LA Galaxy.

The player's Polish representative Jerzy Kopiec expects to hold talks with the club next week and claims Zurawski could be joining forces with David Beckham in the New Year.

"The offer from Galaxy is very serious," he told the Scottish Daily Mail. "They are really determined to sign Maciej and treat him as a big star.

"I am flying to Los Angeles this weekend to make things official."

Now that really does not sound like an agent attempting to force other potential suitors’ hand now does it?

Yours in Celtic
