The Monday Afternoon View from the Gutter

It was a funny old weekends of football. On Saturday Celtic did everything they could to hand the title to Rangers on a plate with their 1-1 draw versus Hibs. To be fair to the Easter Road side however, on the balance of play a draw was probably a fair result. However winning titles is not got anything to do with fair results and if Celtic are to do three in a row they will need to start winning these games.

Yes Hibernian are a talented side but if you cannot beat the other teams in your league then you don't deserve to be crowned champions! Oh and Gordon, get David Murphy signed now!

The result on Saturday handed Rangers a massive boost going into their game yesterday. Sitting only three points and 6 goals adrift a victory yesterday would have seen Rangers top the league. Taking anything out of the two games that they have in hand will see them top the league.

That wasn't to be however, as Rangers decided the best tactic was to kick, punch and fight their way to three points in a game that had tasty written all over it. When Alan Hu'n decided to go right through the back of Chris Clarke the scene had been set. Unfortunately for our plucky cash strapped zeroes, the actions of the neds amongst the team were to transpire against them.

When Chris Clarke decided that Alan Hu'n deserved a bit of retribution he proceeded to take him out of the game on the wing then all hell broke loose. Lee McCullough, who served his clogging time with Murderwell decided that the best way to show his frustration at the challenge was to kick the entirely innocent Severin in the back. The heroic Captain Trackie saw the rage in his players eyes and decided to try and stop him getting into trouble by punching and slapping the player that Lee was in the process of assaulting.

The above version of events was the one that was cobbled together by the Setanta pundits in order to excuse Bazza from assault. Yes it did appear that, in the events directly after the melee Ferguson was trying to prevent Lee from starting a riot, but to do so by raising ones hands is not on. If anything the discussion afterwards should have been "Ferguson did appear to be trying to act as peacemaker, but the very fact that he raised his hands and jumped into the player meant that he had to go"

The fact that he proceeded to raise his hands a total of THREE TIMES in this match without earning even a speaking to let alone a yellow card sums up the state of Scottish Football today.

So where does this leave the title race now? Well from Celtics point of view we are really in the same position we were in prior to this weekends fixtures, three points clear at the top. With a derby game looming on the horizon the games v United and Gretna are must win. If both Celtic Rangers were to gain maximum points between now and Jan 2nd then a victory in that match would see us six points clear. This is a necessity in order to negate the two games in hand that Rangers have.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very, merry Christmas

Yours in Celtic
