Thompson rejects tained talk

Neil Lennon's men only need a draw against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Saturday to wrap up a championship that looked out of their reach in November when they fell 15 points behind Rangers, albeit with two games in hand over the Light Blues.

"To turn it round 15 points, regardless of the 10 points deduction Rangers have had, means absolute massive credit has to go to our players for what they have done," Thompson said.

Celtic had leapfrogged their Old Firm rivals by the time the ailing Ibrox club were deducted 10 points in February for entering administration.

The punishment effectively ended Rangers' title challenge and subsequently, in some quarters, doubt has been cast on the validity of Celtic's almost inevitable championship win.

However, the former Celtic midfielder said: "It is difficult to compare the playing side to now but this would, I think, be sweeter than anything I achieved. Especially being 15 points behind and people writing you off and what have you. All this talk of tainted titles from pundits writing this and writing, is an absolute nonsense."

'Tainted titles' was a theme at the Celtic Park press conference, when Thompson stood in for Lennon who once again bodyswerved his general media duties.

The Englishman reflected back to Rugby Park on May 25, 2003 when he missed a crucial penalty in Celtic's 4-0 win over Killie as Rangers beat Dunfermline 6-1 at Ibrox to dramatically snatch the title from their city rivals on goal difference.

Celtic striker Chris Sutton caused some controversy after the game by accusing the Pars players of "lying down" to Rangers, a comment for which he later apologised and retracted.

Asked of his memory of that day, Thompson said: "(A) bad one. That day when we won and missed a penalty - and Dunfermline lay down... No, I'm only joking, I'm only joking. I blame myself, I was the one who took the penalty and didn't put it in the back of the net so there is no one else to blame. I am not going to point the finger at anyone else."
