Celtic 3-1 Anderlecht

Celtic restored some pride back into Scottish football last night, following Tuesday's embarrasing display by the Scottish "Champions" at Old Trafford.

Henrik Larsson, Liam Miller and Chris Sutton all scored in a riot of a first half against Anderlecht at Parkhead.

As usual on European nights, the amosphere was electric, 60,000 packed into Celtic Park - including a very healthy Anderlecht support.

Martin O'Neill only made one change from Saturday's victory over Kilmarnock, that was Liam Miller in place of Michael Gray, who dropped to the bench.

It was Celtic who started the game in a frantic pace, and were 1-0 up after only 12 minutes gone. John Hartson played a beautiful pass to Agathe on the right-hand side. Agathe's cross was met by the head of Henrik Larsson, who dinked the ball with his head into the corner of the net.

Anderlecht's defenders were seen blaming each other, and seven minutes later, Celtic's lead was doubled. Big Bad John headed a great ball into the path of Liam Miller, who progressed towards goal and smashed home with his left foot.

Celtic Park was on fire as the realisation of what was happening sunk in!

Anderlecht were stunned and Liam Miller was running the show. Stillian Petrov was unlucky to have his shot tipped over the bar, after a Miller run set him up.

From the resulting corner, Chris Sutton made it 3-0. A Petrov corner was flicked on by John Hartson and Sutton threw his body at the ball, sending it smashing into the net. Once again, John Hartson was the creator of the goal, his third goal assist of the night.

After half time, Anderlecht began to drift into the game, showing signs of the good footballing side they are. Celtic's only good chance of the second period came from a John Hartson miscue, one which the big Welshman will be unhappy about.

With 13 minutes of the match remaining, Anderlecht pulled back a very lucky goal. First of all, they were awarded a penalty through cheat of the year Aruna. Secondly, how many teams do you know who get two rebound attempts at a penalty?

Bobo Balde was ajudged to have brought down Aruna when TV replays clearly showed he had dived. The penalty was missed by Molnar - under extreme pressure from the Celtic fans - the rebound was another great save by Magnus Hedman and the third attempt was smashed into the roof of the net by Aruna. The goal saw Hedman questioning the whereabouts of the Celtic defnders for the rebounds, and quite rightly so.

However, the Belgian's goal wasn't to put a dampener on another fantastic European night at Celtic Park. It's worth noting that throughout the superb atmosphere, there was not one bigoted or sectarian song chanted by the home support. This also shows up the Rangers fans who polluted Old Trafford on tuesday night with their bile about "No Surrender" and "King Billy." Once again, an embarrasment to our country.

Celtic's victory last night leaves us with the chance to qualify for the second phase if we beat Bayern Munich in our next game and hope that Anderlecht do not win against Lyon. Easier said than done, but with the Parkhead roar behind the Bhoys, I'm sure they can do it!
