Celtic lost ground to Rangers on the opening day of the Scottish Premier League campaign after drawing a blank at Dunfermline.

Henrik Larsson missed two late chances to give Celtic full points but Dunfermline merited the draw for the work they put into the fixture.

Darren Young also saw a header cleared off the line by Johan Mjallby in a frantic finish.

There was no sign of Chris Sutton who had angered the Dunfermline players with his comments at the end of last season when he accused them of lying down in the title decider against Rangers. Suspended, he was wisely kept in Glasgow.

There was no nastiness on the pitch in a fiercely competitive match which both sides contested fairly. Mjallby had the first opening after 13 minutes when Dunfermline failed to clear an Alan Thompson corner and Shaun Maloney whipped the ball back across goal only for the Swedish defender to head over from close-in.

Dunfermline did not heed the warning and Thompson picked out Mjallby with another corner in the 24th minute but Derek Stillie reacted superbly to block the header at his right-hand post.

Dunfermline responded swiftly and Derek Young squandered their clearest chance of the first half a minute later.

Steve Crawford set him up but, with only Robert Douglas to beat, he directed his effort straight at the goalkeeper when he had time to pick his spot.

Chances were few and far between but Stilian Petrov had an opening after great work from Larsson but he could get no power in his header and Stillie saved easily.

Stillie made another fine save at the start of the second half when Maloney carved out an opening and he leapt to his right to block the ball.

Derek Young forced a save from Douglas at the other end with a 20-yard effort which the goalkeeper held at the second attempt.

Maloney wasted a good opportunity after Scott Wilson gave the ball away but he curled a tame shot into the arms of Stillie with Larsson waiting in the centre.

Crawford then shot inches wide before Barry Nicholson failed to connect with an overhead kick from just ten yards out with only Douglas to beat.

Both sides had chances at the death but Larsson squandered the best - heading a Didier Agathe cross wide and then pulling a shot across the goal with only Stillie to beat.
