Celtic today guaranteed pole position in the SPL as we enter 2005, with a comfortable 2-0 win away to Hearts at Tynecastle. Aiden McGeady and Stan Petrov were the goalscorers, in a match which we could have won by six or seven.
Celtic's performances of late have not been the best but today we looked back to the form we expect of The Bhoys. Every player played well, and all were clearly up for the game. As we know, Tynecastle is one of the most hate-filled atmospheres in the country, and isn't the easiest of places to go. For Celtic to turn up today and make the home side look like a pub team is pretty admirable.
Rab Douglas started the game, with Magnus Hedman absent with a cold. David Marshall looked fine warming up bus has obviously fell down in the goalkeeping pecking order. Ulrik Laursen made a rare start with Joos Valgaeren out injured, and the big Dane played well.
Chris Sutton came close to opening the scoring, and had a fantastic gale all round. Alan Thompson is another player who hasn't been at his best recently, but both were outstanding today.
It wasn't long before Celtic were in the lead. After only nine minutes played, Stan Petrov squared the ball across the face of the Hearts area, Aiden McGeady was there to score his second goal in consecutive games at Tynecastle - the ground where he made his Celtic first team debut.
The noise in the Roseburn Stand was duly pumped up and from the on the team looked more than comfortable.
Mark DeVries was causing our defence some trouble, winning most things in the air, but Hearts failed to conjure up many chances. At the other end, Stan Petrov came close and John Hartson should have done better to double Celtic's lead.
On 40 minutes, Celtic were denied a stonewall penalty when Hartson was brought down by Maybury but coward Mike McCurry waved play on.
In the second period, Celtic were out for another. McGeady, Petrov and Hartson again all came close but Hearts still remained in the game.
On 68 minutes, Stan Petrov did the honours, and sealed the points for the Scottish Champions. Sutton and Hartson combined after catching an Ulrik Laursen delivery, Sutton's flick to Petrov was perfect and the ball restled in the back of Craig Gordon's net.
Hearts' racist and bigoted support headed for the exits, the party in the Celtic end was just beginning.
John Hartson found himself one on one with the Hearts goalkeeper late on, and could possible have taken the ball around him, but opted for a shot which was easily saved between the legs of Craig Gordon.
Still though, a 2-0 win at Tynecastle will do most of us. We played like a team who mean business and if we keep that up, no one will stop us. Next up are Livingston at Celtic Park on January 2nd.
